Bangkok: An aid group said about 4,000 villagers have fled across the border into Thailand, after government troops in Myanmar shelled areas near their refugee camp in fighting with ethnic Karen forces.

The Free Burma Rangers said troops from the Karen National Union had so far prevented Myanmar soldiers and their allies in the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army from overrunning the camp that is located near the Thai border.

The group said refugees began streaming out of the Ler Per Her camp on Friday, and the Myanmar forces started launching mortar attacks near the camp on Saturday. The refugees, many carrying everything they owned, walked across the border to Tak province, Thailand.

The Free Burma Rangers called it a "a serious attack on defenceless people who fled just to get to the camp and now have had to flee over the border."
